We have kept goats for over 30 years. In this time our herd has evolved from Dairy and Mohair to Meat and Casmere. Our original Nubians and Angoras have in time gave way to a range-savvy mix of Alpine, Boer, Angora, Cashmere, Kiko, Spanish, Nubian and a few others. The goal of our breeding program is a hardy animal capable of putting on weight quickly and efficiently on our local browse.
We contain the herd in pens to intinsively reduce weeds and at other times are free browsers contained in a feeding area by herder, horse and hounds or accompanied through the range eating fields and hillsides, mesa tops and arroyo bottoms. So they also must be herd animals-must keep with the group not straying or straggling.
Our dairy goats are tough. The alpines are generally herd leaders and security enforcers while easy going boers and their crosses tend to fill out the masses. Our newer cashmere, kiko, spanish goats are taking over though. Their ranks include a number of sizable wethers which are used to running the show. They came from a herd put together for just this work and are teaching the rest of the herd the art of eating. It is amazing to watch them strip the Russian Olive and Tamarix trees up to 6 feet.
