I needed another dog, and as Zuli grew and learned I decided she would be a great mother, I thought her genetics would be good to keep around. I started looking for a mate for her, but was not impressed by any I came upon. By the time I found a good stud locally (a cowdog in FT Sumner area) I had doubts that I wanted to go that route especially as attached to me as she was- didn't want that trauma for her. SO we decided to get another puppy and aim for one we would want to breed to Zuli. I had seen ads for Hart 2 and they looked pretty established and work oriented in their breedings. I called Norma and she had two pups a week shy of 8 which she wold be willing to sell as breeding stock. I had the choice of red or black. It would seem that the black is very striking, at least Buck is- his first week here he had the goats attention through the fence. They moved away when they saw him and gave him their attention. His second week here a mother and kid got out of the pen and he helped Zuli re-pen the mother (a full size, horned alpine which dislikes dogs), but the kid was too changeable for Zuli and she was having trouble. Frustration was about to happen so I stopped her and Buck just went right on- blocking and turning te quick kid until they were back at the gate and he pushed it right in. At 10 weeks Buck had the flare and the finesse for capriciousness. He didn't work regularly until he was seven months or so when easy things like penning the herd and individuals came up.
As a pup he was always very particular. His toys rested with him in a bunch- keeping them all together, and that is how he works the goats. He keeps stragglers in the herd and turns back the lead wen they start to bolt. He is still learning and is a bit rough at times, but recently he has begun working kids several days old and up. Zuli gives him lessons and watches that he doesn't forget himself witht the little ones. He keeps rack of the smallest which sometimes stay back in a bush or jst slow down. He has a few that he works and prefers to keep in the center of the herd.
Bucky was born December 17, 2008, and was picked up in Texas halfway to where he was bred. His lineage contains some old original lines, he is a working type all the way and stays with the herd when I go home on horseback.
