Meet The Herd

The Horned Locust herd is made up of several different breeds of goat. We started out with nubians 30 years ago. Then we went over to Alpines. Now the herd is going wild. South African Boers are lending their weed eating meaty frames to a mix of kiko, spanish and cashmere crossed vegetation consuming goats. The result is a hardy and intelligent goat capable of consumption and thoughtfully adaptable. Our membership in the Santa Fe Farmers Market provides us with an excellent place to sell goat meat. The Boer is known for its muscle gain and shape, as well as taste. But less known is the sweet and rich milk that can be harvested from the Boer crossed with a milk breed. And the innovative ways they devour their browse, using their entire bodies to roll over the resprouts like a tank or nimbly reach up and pull down the top with a well placed hoof. The herd has been trained over the years to trust their people as well as their horses and even their dogs. Many young goats will even find themselves following a dog rather than the mother with the same markings. The herd is a calm one which gladly takes the field and sets about clearing it one bite at a time.

Goat Browse Boer Does

Our goats are managed with the help of horses, Dunny, Chapo, and new mounts Pecos and Bebe. With herding dogs, Zuli, and Buck now in training as well as our predator control dogs, Maremmas, Regal, Yolo and Rocky.

Each of these animals has been selected based on their natural and inherited interest in performing their job for their people and they as individuals are fulfilled through the work. Some animals may end up proving to be less or other than anticiaped and are moved to new homes that better suit their interests and abilities.
