Mission of SunStarHerbs

Sunstar is a family owned and operated farm working toward sustainability by gardening and raising animals. We are regular vendors at the Santa Fe Farmers Market in the new Railyard in downtown Santa Fe. Our land benefits from the safe and natural goat fertilizer and rain water catchment and soak system and as a result produces some beautiful Jujubes, a variety of Herbs as well as some delicious Tomatoes and Sqashes. Plants are grown in diverse but complementing communities and alternating rows eliminating mono cropping associated problems of disease and insect infestations.

Swallowtail Works the Milk Thistle

Our goats feed off the land for 100% of their diet through the year and supply our gardens with nitrogen rich fertilizer. They have put their eating talent to work for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) at the Galisteo Dam in Santa Fe County, New Mexico where they have been reducing Tamarix, Ragweed, Tumbleweed and Cocklebur regrowth after the mechanical removal by the Corps beginning in the fall of 2006. The USACE needed to keep the vegetation down and locals were concerned about using herbicides. So our herd provided them an opportunity to go Green. We have seeded grasses and are witnessing a vibrant change in the diversity and vitality of grasses and return of local browse. As time goes by the wildlife are also returning to the area in force. Thousands of raucus Red Wing Blackbirds spent their winter bedding down every night at a little cattail covered pond. The barren hillsides where the dam was originally shaped are sprouting where the goats have walked, providing little foot holds for nature's local seed spread.

The Horned Locusts Remediators are now suburban Goatscapers too! We have begun work in the community of Eldorado near Santa Fe removing fire threat from communal lands and clearing yards too (check out our new page on Eldorado's Herbs in the Greenbelt). Find out more about why the GOAT is a most valuable tool in the balancing of the land. Follow us on Facebook or catch the daily blog at hornedlocustgoatscaping.blogspot.com

Zuli Watches Her Goats

SunStar has been growing herbs for market since 1996 when we became members of the Santa Fe Farmers Market. Our cash crop then was catnip in the form of catnip stuffed cat toys made from recycled denim material and sown on a solar powered sewing machine. We grew nursery plants for many years and now sell a variety of fresh cut and dried medicinal and culinary herbs. Contact us for a complete listing of available products. Jujubes are fresh starting in the first weeks of September until the frost in October. Then dried fruits can last through the year.

Fresh jujube Fruit

We harvest Taos Sage in the Tres Piedres area in the peak season before bloom and wrap smudge sticks that are rolled tight for even burning. We sell other herbal incense sticks including Thai Basil, Wormwod and Southernwood. Southernwood is a great smoke to use for dropping particles (like dust) out of the air, and is good as a pre-meeting aligning energy for good communication. Mugwort has been traditionally used to relieve sinus pressure and related headaches and when burned near the surface of sore muscles is a pleasant relaxant allowing pulled injuries to be worked out. It is also a pleasant incense and when burned before sleep helps relax, brings on dreams and helps them to be retained.

We also sell a feather bundle that can be used as a fan for smoke, ornamentally on a shelf, or even as a cat toy. Many hats are adorned with these feather creations. Also in our Craft Section is a line of hand painted Buffalo Gourd Ornaments. Designs include cats, suns and stars, horses in all type of action, goats, and pastoral scenes as well as southwestern style geometric dsigns and of course Rudolf the Red, Nosed Reindeer.

feather bundles used for hats, smudging, or decoration. Cats love them!
